First and foremost I just wanted to say thank you so much to everyone who has been showing me love on the Facebook, Twitter & Instagram. I love you all! It really does feel like the Holiday Season!
As some of you may know, today I experienced my debut as a plus size model on ABC7’s Windy City Live. All I can say is the entire experience was a glam extravaganza! I haven’t felt that gorgeous since I got married last year. Everyone was so friendly and the entire staff at Windy City & The Shops at North bridge really made it a morning to remember. I am gonna give y’all a play by play of the events that led to my moment on stage.
I realized that I do not own any heels. I had to step out in the tundra to borrow my friend Millie’s heels. We then ran to the nail salon so that I could get my eyebrows SNATCHED! The man that usually does my eyebrows was busy with another client, so I had to have this new woman and I was terrified she would have me looking like this:
Instead of this:
So Thank the Lord & the angel Gabriel the brows came out on POINT!
I was so careful about what I ate for dinner. I bought some non name brand Shapewear from Burlington Coat Factory and I was terrified they wouldn’t fit. I brushed my teeth, twice. I went to sleep around midnight. I prayed I would not get random pimples and blotch marks on my face. Then in the midst of tussling and not actually sleeping I decided to watch an episode of Cutthroat Kitchen on Netflix. I was so nervous and kept thinking none of the clothes would fit. I kept thinking are they going to have me wear pants? Will the pants have enough stretch? What if I fall on stage and the heel snaps in half and this happens to me:
As any plus size woman, or let’s backtrack— any woman or man can stress about not fitting into clothing. I have never modeled a day in my life. I am an actor. Plain & Simple. The only familiarity I have with the modeling world is Tyra Banks on America’s Next Top Model and my obsession with Anna Wintour throwing shade.
Also, I am not graceful. My favorite brand of shoes are Crocs and Old Navy flip flops. I have never tried to wear actual heels for more than 25 minutes (not even on my wedding day) I own one pair of Jeans and a myriad of lounge wear that I try to pass off as office clothing…shame. I went to sleep and decided that tomorrow will take care of itself.
The Morning at Home:
I woke up at 7:10am. Excited and ran into the shower. When I got out of the shower my husband had half a english muffin, an egg with fruit waiting for me on the bed. LOVE HIM! Then the task was trying to get the shapewear on my body. Baby when I tell you I felt like I was doing an Olympic Shot-put and Javelin routine trynna get these faux-Spanx to cover my Pillsbury Crescent Rolls on my back & belly I had to ask my husband to help me. Hilarious!
Now the moment of truth happened when I took my silk scarf off and had to delicately unravel each bantu knot into perfectly, coiled curls. For those reading that do not know what bantu knots are…imagine Crazy Eyes from “Orange is the New Black” or Jada Pinkett-Smith’s hairstyle in the “Matrix.”
A Note on My Hair:
I am new to natural hair. I wrote a blog on it and you can find it by clicking here. The thing with my natural hair is that it only wants to act right when I have nothing planned. In other words, I have my best hair days when I am sitting at home watching Scandal re-runs, but when I have to go to an event….chile bye. My hair does not care about me or my feelings. When I tell you I had to do a random up-do because my hair came out those bantu-knots looking like this:
Thank God for a Last Minute Up-Do, AS I AM Hair Products and a quick viewing of YouTube Natural Hair Blogger CHARJAY for her videos:
Windy City Live:
Chicagoans reading this know that Lake Shore Drive can be hellish at certain points in the morning. So I am so thankful I was able to get to the studio on time. When I approached ABC on State Street there were lines of people trying to be studio audience members. I was so bubbled with excitement. I made it into the Green room and there were 5 gorgeous models waiting anxiously. Everyone was so sweet and professional. The backstage area was buzzing with coffee, conversation and clothing.
I tried everything on and Thank God everything fit…except for my shoes haha! I had a gorgeous pair of shoes on by Chinese Laundry. You wanna know a secret…those shoes were stuffed with SOCKS! The shoes were a size 10 and I wear a size 8 and a half. I was so hyped though, because I felt like a true model in that moment. It was awesome. I channeled my mother and my inner Grace Jones, held my back straight and walked out smiling.
I wore: a beautiful Ralph Lauren little black dress; Glint Clutch; Neiman Marcus Last Call Sequin Shrug; Chinese Laundry Shoes; and Kate Spade Earrings. Nobody on this planet could not tell me that I was NOT Beyonce’s cousin. Catch the Video Here!
For the first time in my life- I realized I am not shapeless, I have hips & actual curves! This dress and the entire outfit accentuated all the right curves in all the right places. I felt sexy, delicious and grown! I walked out on stage and felt so beautiful for the first time in a really long time. I learned something really important that I will take with me into the new year and you should too. When I take pride in what I wear as well as taking care of my physical appearance that gives me more confidence. I’m not telling you to go on a shopping spree and get into a situation with Capital One. What I am saying is take a little extra step in the morning to spruce up by wearing something awesome, or even by giving yourself a compliment!
I thank Factory Women, Shops at North bridge & Windy City Live for giving me the opportunity to shine today.
Love y’all and thank you again for watching : )
